#SummerReading #BookReview for #August2016 #TheKitchenHouse by #KathleenGrissom Deluxe Edition

(Source: Blueridge Beauty Blogger)

It only took me to finish this book, "The Kitchen House" by Kathleen Grissom, because of the wonderful characters and story told from two women's perspectives about race, family, and loyalty on a Virginian Southern Plantation!! The two women who tell the story are Lavinia, an Irish orphaned now indentured servant, and Belle, an kitchen cook and slave, whom both serve their Captain Pyke and his family!! There is no clear "Black and White" as this story tells the various degrees of differences between white servants and black servants, social status between the poor and the affluent , and the struggle of belonging within a family for both of these girls!!  Lavinia and Belle are "sisters at heart" despite their differences sharing the joys and pains of girlhood and womanhood together, both are very intelligent and resourceful, both are very independent thinking despite barriers, and both of them are determined to defy social conventions and forged a future by their terms!

I am the type of reader that briefly reads the introduction to the book before I further decide to read it or not! :)

I love the illustration describing the places and homes on the Tall Oaks Plantation which helped me visualized where Lavinia, Belle, and the rest of the characters in "The Kitchen House" took place!

Once I read this "Prologue" from Lavinia's perspective about events in the future, I knew I had to read this book to find out what lead to the tragic events on Tall Oaks plantation! Hence, I read this book in three days! :)

I hope to attend a local "Meet the Author" at a local library in September which will be a real treat and hear other exciting news from Ms Kathleen!! I love the details of the planatation and the past in this story by the author and if you enjoyed "The Help" then you will enjoyed "The Kitchen House" too!

Until next time...

#WellnessWednesday Wellness #CarePackage on My Road of Healing

(Source: Blueridge Beauty Blogger)

(Source: Blueridge Beauty Blogger)

A few weekends ago, one of my dear friends from our church stopped by at the house to visit me with her daughter!! I felt so blessed when she took time out to visit me on a Saturday morning in my morning lounge clothes!! Her name will remain "animous" because her story of God, depression, and path of healing and victory is hers to tell BUT I was so truly grateful to give me encourage, a smile and hug, goodies like the care bag (which included CHOCOLATE...Thank you, Jesus!), a smoothie (mango and orange!), and flower plant that is hard to kill!! I love the card that she gave me which is filled with wonderful Scripture and encourage on this path of this "invisible disease" which does affect you physically, mentally, and spiritually!! I told her "Thank You" and that I am looking forward to get back to what I love doing after my next doctor's appointment...going back to Church with my friend!

I am not an Medical Expert, Therapist, nor Spiritual Leader BUT I can say is let people in about your difficulties, including mental health, that there are Authentic Believers that will not only pray for you but visit and come alongside you as well!! And if that Church or place of worship doesn't offer help and community in your time of need when you really need it the most....then go to licensed community resource to help with your mental health needs because you are never alone!! I know that I am never alone in Christ Jesus even in my darkest times that He is with me now til hereafter! :)

Until next time....

#FoodieFriday #KingofCheeses #ParmigianoReggiano

(Source: Blueridge Beauty Blogger)

As homecook and Southern lady, I do enjoy my visits to the local grocery store to stop and check out the cheeses at the cheese/deli department!!  I do agreed that a little (or generous portion) of Parmigiano-Reggiano (or commonly Parmesan) is wonderful European cheese that I can't imagine living without which I instantly think Italian cuisine and Pizza!! Whether its the rind in sauce or shaved slices, my family and I enjoyed this very flavorful cheese!

I have been maintaining my personal health goals over the summer and decided to try out several other Lean Cuisine meals!! I am a Southern Woman and a Hungry Girl in which I am being true to myself while making smart health choices for my health and body type!!  I love comfort foods so I decided to try out this Lean Cuisine Comfort Foods "Steak Portabellos" which is very tasty and satisfying!! I love the tender beef cuts, mushrooms, and gravy plus I enjoyed the broccoli!! And I did resisted the "temptation" of getting a slice of bread to soak up that remaining gravy (the struggle is real!!). I highly recommend getting the Lean Cuisine Comfort Foods Steak Portabello today!
